Slay the Spire 2 1.0 release: Sep 2027Not announced: our best guess from Mega Crit's 1 to 2 year Early Access plan.
Best guessMega Crit's Early Access FAQ on Steam says it will stay in Early Access "Until the game feels great! Last time we thought it would be about a year and it took about 1.5 years. So perhaps in the same 1 - 2 year range." We count 18 months from the Mar 5, 2026 Early Access launch, as the first game took, to the first Thursday of Sep 2027 (Mega Crit ships on Thursdays) at 10 AM Pacific, the hour of the Early Access launch. Pathing Guide

In Slay the Spire 2, plan your route before choosing Neow's blessing, fight a few normal enemies before the first Elite, take one or two Elites per act near rest sites (guides differ on how many), and use ? rooms, shops and rest sites to match your deck's health. Check each act's boss on the map and pick Ancient blessings that fix your deck's weakest point.

The best route in Slay the Spire 2 is the one that lets your deck take as many rewards as it can survive: normal fights early, one or two Elites per act placed near rest sites, a Merchant when you have Gold, and ? rooms when you need to avoid risk. Guide outlets agree on that shape but not on the numbers: TheGamer (Mar 9, 2026) aims for at least one Elite per act and two as the ideal, Mobalytics (updated Mar 19, 2026) says "a few each act," and PC Gamer's Ascension 10 players put survival first in Act 1. The map shows each act's boss, so you can plan for it. The game is in Early Access and map generation has changed in patches; each piece of advice below is credited to whoever gave it.

Quick facts

Room types Enemy, Elite, ? (Unknown), Merchant, Treasure, Rest Site, then the boss (TheGamer, Mar 15, 2026)
Elites per act At least 1, ideally 2 (TheGamer); "a few each act" (Mobalytics)
Earliest Elite Not on floor 6 since v0.101.0 (main branch Apr 17, 2026)
Boss Shown on the map from the start of each act
Ancients Neow at the start; one Ancient at the start of Acts 2 and 3
Paths you can ignore 3 times with Neow's Winged Boots (Major Update #1, Apr 17, 2026)
Act 2 fixed route Tezcatara's Golden Compass

Read the map first

Open the map before you choose anything. Game Rant's tips (Mar 7, 2026) say the map is always available from the icon at the top right, even during Neow's dialogue, and that Neow's offer should fit your route: a big Gold reward suits a route with an early Merchant, a max HP loss suits a route with fewer Elites.

Look at the boss icon. Each act's boss shows on the map, and PC Gamer's Abigail Shannon (Mar 13, 2026) says to check it at the start of the run and prepare your deck: against Vantom, whose Slippery makes the next several hits deal only 1 damage, she wants multi-hit attacks such as Twin Strike. Harvey Randall wrote in PC Gamer (May 15, 2026) that every boss can be prepared for because you see who you face, unlike the first game's Act 3 surprises. Each boss is on Bosses.

Room types

The map has six kinds of room besides the boss. TheGamer's events guide (Mar 15, 2026) lists Unknown (?), Merchant, Treasure, Rest Site, Enemy and Elite, and notes there is no dedicated event room: events come from ? rooms, which can also turn out to be another room type, though events are the most likely result. The Acts and the Map page has the layout, and Events the events.

How many Elites to fight

The guides disagree, so match the count to your deck. TheGamer aims for at least one Elite per act with two as the ideal, fought near rest sites. Mobalytics says Elites are scary but worth it because their relics can define a run, and to learn to take "a few each act." Game Rant says an Elite gives a card, a random potion and a relic but can end a run, and that with plenty of Gold the Merchant is safer.

Fight Elites when the deck is ready, not because the relic is good. Untapped.gg's Dillon Skiffington says in his relic guide (Apr 2026) that if a strong relic does not match your deck yet, consider avoiding the next few Elites, while a relic such as Sword of Stone rewards an Elite-heavy path. Kotaku's Lewis Parker recommends the "Kill 15 Elites" Epoch for each character early on, which unlocks more content (Kotaku, Mar 18, 2026). The fights are on Elites.

Act 1: safety or greed

Take normal fights before the first Elite. Mobalytics says to fight several normal enemies early in Act 1 for Gold and card rewards before Elites, and to keep rest sites before hard fights. Mega Crit has helped: since v0.101.0 (Mar 27, 2026) Elites can no longer spawn on floor 6, "to better match StS1", because Neow counts as the first floor, and map generation was improved "to help limit the number of maps overflowing with early monster rooms." Both reached the main branch on Apr 17, 2026.

At high Ascension, survival comes first. Kotaku's Parker calls Act 1 possibly the hardest act in the series, and GamesRadar+'s Austin Wood says on PC Gamer's panel (Sep 18, 2026) that the easiest way to clear Act 1 reliably is to rest at every opportunity. Wood also says a run usually needs to spike within the first five floors, which argues for early fights and shops. Mega Crit's Anthony Giovannetti said in the v0.103.0 notes (Apr 10, 2026) that he plans "to shift some of the difficulty from Act 1 -> Act 3", so the balance between the acts is still moving.

Some characters want a slower route. TheGamer's Defect guide (Mar 15, 2026) advises playing the Defect for the late game: rest when low, take fewer fights and more ? rooms until Act 2.

Rest sites and shops

Place Elites just before rest sites. TheGamer says to fight Elites near rest sites, and Game Rant says to weigh every hit you take against how far away the next rest site is. Whether to rest or Smith there is on Merchant and Rest Sites; Mobalytics calls resting "bait" when you could upgrade.

Route through a Merchant when you have Gold to spend. Game Rant lists the stock as 5 character cards, 2 Colorless cards, 3 relics, 3 potions and a card removal, and calls the Merchant safer than an Elite when you are rich. At Ascension 3, Poverty, enemies and chests drop 25% less Gold (PCGamesN, Mar 10, 2026), so shops buy less.

? rooms

Take ? rooms for safety or for event rewards. Most become events, and some events change your route's value: at the Byrdonis Nest you can take an egg to hatch at the next rest site, which PC Gamer's Abigail Shannon (Mar 13, 2026) says is usually the stronger long-term choice. Mega Crit's April 2026 Neowsletter (Apr 17, 2026) counted 51% of players taking that egg and 49% eating it. The Juzu Bracelet relic stops normal fights from appearing in ? rooms (OP.GG, beta v0.111.0 data).

Choosing Ancient blessings

Ancients replace the first game's boss relics. Neow greets you at the start of the run, and Acts 2 and 3 each open with an Ancient offering three blessings: Orobas, Pael or Tezcatara in Act 2, Nonupeipe, Tanx or Vakuu in Act 3, and Darv in either (Game Rant, Mar 11, 2026). Every blessing is on Neow and the Ancients.

Pick the blessing that fixes your deck's weakest point. Randall says that in the first game beating an act nearly always meant taking an Energy relic, while in the sequel Energy relics often carry major downsides and other Ancient boons can define a run (PC Gamer, May 15, 2026). Game Rant lists the Energy offers' costs: Blessed Antler adds a Dazed each combat, Spiked Gauntlets make Powers cost 1 more, Ectoplasm stops Gold, Philosopher's Stone gives enemies Strength, Sozu stops potions, Velvet Choker limits you to 6 cards a turn, and Whispering Earring lets Vakuu play your first turn. Randall adds that Tezcatara's Seal of Gold costs 5 Gold a turn, which can lock you out of key shop buys. Game Rant singles out Darv's Runic Pyramid (keep your hand at end of turn) as especially valuable for stacking builds.

Pick Neow's blessing for the first five floors. Randall takes Silken Tress at Ascension 10 because the first floors are about solving damage, and Wood says Act 1 pushes picks toward explosive relics such as Silver Crucible (PC Gamer panel). Winged Boots, added in Major Update #1 (Apr 17, 2026), lets you ignore paths 3 times, which opens routes to an Elite or shop the map would not reach.

The Golden Compass

Tezcatara's Golden Compass replaces the Act 2 map with one fixed track. TheGamer (Mar 17, 2026) gives it: normal fight, Unknown, normal fight, Rest Site, normal fight, Rest Site, Unknown, Chest, Unknown, Chest, Unknown, Merchant, Elite, Rest Site, Elite, Rest Site, Boss. TheGamer rates it below Tezcatara's Toy Box or Yummy Cookie, warns there is no escape from the two closing Elites, and says to skip it if a relic like Sword of Stone needs more Elite kills; PCGamesN (Mar 11, 2026) calls the path a more balanced, less risky route.

Pathing in co-op

In co-op the party votes on the route. PC Gamer's co-op guide (Mar 24, 2026) says players vote and a split vote is settled at random, and players can draw on the map while choosing, per TheGamer (Mar 9, 2026). Team strategy is on Co-op Strategy.

Frequently asked questions

How many Elites should you fight per act in Slay the Spire 2? Guides differ: TheGamer says at least one Elite per act in Slay the Spire 2, two ideally, fought near rest sites; Mobalytics says "a few each act"; and at Ascension 10 GamesRadar+'s Austin Wood puts survival first in Act 1.

Can Elites appear early in Slay the Spire 2? Since Mega Crit's v0.101.0 patch (main branch Apr 17, 2026), Elites can no longer spawn on floor 6 of Slay the Spire 2, matching the first game, because Neow counts as the first floor.

What is the best path in Slay the Spire 2? No single path is best in Slay the Spire 2: Mobalytics says to fight several normal enemies before Elites in Act 1, TheGamer to take Elites near rest sites, and Game Rant to route to a Merchant when you have Gold.

What is the best Ancient choice in Slay the Spire 2? It depends on the deck: PC Gamer's Harvey Randall says Ancient Energy relics in Slay the Spire 2 often carry major downsides, Game Rant singles out Darv's Runic Pyramid for stacking builds, and at Neow Randall takes Silken Tress while Austin Wood favors Silver Crucible.

Can you see the boss in Slay the Spire 2? Yes. Each act's boss icon shows on Slay the Spire 2's map, and PC Gamer's Abigail Shannon says to check it at the start of the run and build for that fight.

Should you take the Golden Compass in Slay the Spire 2? TheGamer rates Tezcatara's Golden Compass below her Toy Box or Yummy Cookie because its fixed Act 2 route ends in two Elites you cannot avoid, while PCGamesN calls the path more balanced and less risky.
