Neow and the Ancients
Ancients are the beings who greet you at the start of each act in Slay the Spire 2 and offer three relics to choose one: Neow at the start of the run, Orobas, Pael or Tezcatara in Act 2, Nonupeipe, Tanx or Vakuu in Act 3, and Darv in either. They heal you on arrival and replace the first game's boss relics; Neow alone has 28 possible blessings on the main branch v0.107.1.
Slay the Spire 2 has eight Ancients, powerful beings who meet you at the start of each act and offer three relics, of which you take one: Neow, "Mother of Resurrection (Exiled)", opens every run, Orobas, Pael or Tezcatara open Act 2, Nonupeipe, Tanx or Vakuu open Act 3, and Darv can appear in either. Mega Crit explained in its November 2025 Neowsletter that Acts 2 and 3 have "their own separate pools of random Ancients", whose blessings are relics found nowhere else, and that they take the place of the first game's boss relics. Ancients also heal you when you reach them. The game is in Steam Early Access, and Mega Crit has added and rebalanced Ancient relics in almost every patch, so the tables below give the main branch v0.107.1 and label beta changes.

How Ancients work
An Ancient replaces a boss relic. In the first game, beating an act's boss gave a choice of boss relics; in the sequel, Mega Crit wrote, the next act opens with an Ancient instead, and its blessings are exclusive relics. PC Gamer's Harvey Randall notes that the first game's act rewards were nearly always energy relics, while the sequel's energy relics usually carry a real downside and other blessings can define a run.
Each Ancient shows you three of its relics, one from each of three pools. Mega Crit's notes speak of these pools when moving relics between them: Tezcatara's Seal of Gold went "to option 3 so that it is in the same pool as Pumpkin Candle" in v0.105.0. Mega Crit has not published which relic sits in which pool.
You see which Ancient is coming. Mega Crit says each has its own node on the map, as bosses do; see Acts and the Map.
Ancients heal you. The Ascension 2 modifier, Weary Traveler, reads "Ancients only heal 80% of your missing HP", so the heal on reaching an Ancient is smaller from Ascension 2 up; see Ascension.
In co-op every player chooses their own blessing. PC Gamer's co-op guide says Ancients and events give each player their own options, and the v0.108.0 beta clarified that Silken Tress applies "only to the player who chose it". Neow's Massive Scroll is offered only in co-op; see Co-op Multiplayer.
Neow (Act 1)
Neow, "Mother of Resurrection (Exiled)", starts every run. She offers three relics from her own list of 28 on the main branch, the largest of any Ancient. Design lead Anthony Giovannetti wrote in April 2026: "I especially like adding more variety to Neow, so we will be looking to expand her set of relics even more over time." Asked whether Neow still gives worse choices to players who died before the first boss, as in the first game, he answered "no" (Feb 17, 2026).

Source: Spire Codex (game data, v0.107.1), read Oct 26, 2026, in the order the data lists them; changes from Mega Crit's notes for v0.100.0, v0.103.0, v0.104.0, v0.105.0 and v0.106.0, all on main by Jun 19, 2026.
The public beta adds two Neow relics. v0.109.0 (Jul 17, 2026) added Dowsing Rod, which adds the Quest card Dowsing ("After entering 5 more ? rooms, transform this into Abundance"), and Neow's Sacrifice, which gives the potion Ambergris and the curse Guilty. Neither is on the main branch.
Neow's Bones had a predictable curse until Major Update #2. Its curse came from a list of ten, and a correlation in the random number generator let players predict it from the Act 1 roll; PC Gamer reported that a run starting in the Underdocks was 54% likely to get Debt before the RNG rework in v0.107.1.
Orobas, "Living Rainbow" (Act 2)
Orobas offers cards, potions and other characters' cards, and the only way to upgrade your starter relic. Touch of Orobas replaces your starter relic with an Ancient version, and Archaic Tooth turns a starter card into an Ancient one.

Pael, "Melting Dragon" (Act 2)
Pael's ten relics are all named for parts of Pael, and several reshape the deck. Pael's Growth enchants a card with Clone so it can be copied at Rest Sites, and Pael's Tooth removes 5 cards and returns them one by one, upgraded.

The Golden Compass swaps the Act 2 map for one fixed route. TheGamer lists it as 17 stops ending Merchant, Elite, Rest Site, Elite, Rest Site and the boss, and rates it below Toy Box or Yummy Cookie (Mar 17, 2026); the full path is on Acts and the Map.
Nonupeipe, "Serendipity Incarnate" (Act 3)
Nonupeipe dresses you up. Her first line, in the game data, is "You're looking quite drab, here, let's find something delightful for you to wear." Casey Yano explained that her name comes from the "NOPE" placeholder icon: two side by side read "NONOPEPE"; community manager Demi Montes voices her.

Vakuu, "The First Demon" (Act 3)

Whispering Earring's autoplay plays your hand in order. PC Gamer's panel says Vakuu plays your first turn "from left to right", and lists it with Lord's Parasol among the game's strangest effects.
Darv, "The Hoarder" (Acts 2 and 3)
Darv can appear at the start of either Act 2 or Act 3, and he gives away his collection. His first line is "Take anything from that pile over there, put it to good use!", and his 12 relics include four that give 1 Energy a turn at a price: Ectoplasm, Sozu, Philosopher's Stone and Velvet Choker.

| Philosopher's Stone | Gain 1 Energy at the start of each turn. ALL enemies start combat with 1 Strength. |

Source: Spire Codex (game data, v0.107.1), read Oct 26, 2026. On the beta, v0.109.0 "changed up Darv blessing pools for more variety (will see Energy relics more often)". Ancient cards from Dusty Tome are on Cards.
What guides advise
No published source ranks the Ancients against each other. Game Rant lists every Ancient and its relics (Mar 11, 2026) without a ranking, and Mobalytics' relic tier list leaves Ancient relics out. Which Ancient you meet is random; the advice is about which relic to take.
Writers favor Neow picks that make Act 1 easier. GamesRadar+'s Austin Wood, on PC Gamer's panel (Sep 18, 2026), says a run usually needs to spike within the first five floors, for example Cursed Pearl into a big shop or Silken Tress giving a strong card, and that Act 1's difficulty skews Neow picks toward explosive relics like Silver Crucible. Harvey Randall takes Silken Tress "every time" at Ascension 10 because its first floors are about solving damage.
Game Rant says to read the map before choosing. Its beginner guide suggests a Gold reward when the route has an early Merchant and a Max HP loss when the route has fewer Elites.
Energy relics are judged by their downside. Randall points to Whispering Earring, which gives 1 Energy but lets Vakuu play your first turn, and Seal of Gold, whose Gold cost can lock you out of shop buys. Game Rant singles out Darv's Runic Pyramid as especially valuable for stacking builds such as the Regent's Stars.
Some blessings change how you build. Randall says Nonupeipe's Glitter, which gives every card reward a once-per-combat Replay, pushed him from a thin deck to a thick, value-heavy one, and that Pael's Clone can yield dozens of copies of a card. Pocket Tactics' Regent Star build uses Divine Destiny, Orobas' upgrade of his starter relic (Pocket Tactics, Sep 30, 2026). More on Relics and Deck-Building Strategy.

Acts and the MapA Slay the Spire 2 run climbs three acts, the Overgrowth or the Underdocks (a coin flip), then the Hive, then Glory, each opening with an Ancient and ending in a boss, before the Architect ends the climb. Each act is a branching map of combat, Elite, ? (Unknown), Merchant, Treasure and Rest Site rooms; Game Rant puts a run at about 45 to 50 encounters and up to about 40 minutes.

AscensionSlay the Spire 2 has 10 Ascension levels, not 20: each one stacks a new handicap, from Swarming Elites at Ascension 1 to Double Boss at Ascension 10, and you unlock the next level by winning on your highest one. Ascension 6 has been Inflation (pricier card removal) since Apr 17, 2026; it was Gloom (fewer rest sites) at launch.

Co-op MultiplayerSlay the Spire 2 has online co-op for up to 4 players, Steam friends only with no matchmaking: one player hosts and the others join, everyone shares the map and fights the same enemies, which scale with the party, while each player keeps their own character, HP, deck, relics and rewards. Co-op has its own multiplayer-only cards and its own Ascension progress. -
