Slay the Spire 2 1.0 release: Sep 2027Not announced: our best guess from Mega Crit's 1 to 2 year Early Access plan.
Best guessMega Crit's Early Access FAQ on Steam says it will stay in Early Access "Until the game feels great! Last time we thought it would be about a year and it took about 1.5 years. So perhaps in the same 1 - 2 year range." We count 18 months from the Mar 5, 2026 Early Access launch, as the first game took, to the first Thursday of Sep 2027 (Mega Crit ships on Thursdays) at 10 AM Pacific, the hour of the Early Access launch. Regent

The Regent is one of the two new characters in Slay the Spire 2, the "Heir to the Throne of Stars", unlocked by playing one run as the Silent. He starts with 75 HP, 99 Gold, 3 Energy, the relic Divine Right (3 Stars at the start of each combat) and a 10-card deck of 4 Strike, 4 Defend, Falling Star and Venerate.

The Regent is one of the two new characters in Slay the Spire 2, unlocked by playing one run as the Silent, win or lose, and he starts with 75 HP, the relic Divine Right and a deck built around Stars, a second resource that is not refilled each turn (TheGamer's unlock guide; Spire Codex, game data v0.107.1). The game calls him "Heir to the Throne of Stars", and Mega Crit introduced him in December 2025 as "a domineering, arrogant alien from a distant planet" (Mega Crit's December 2025 Neowsletter). He plays with two systems no other character has: Stars, which some cards spend and others store, and Forge, which builds a sword card called the Sovereign Blade. Slay the Spire 2 is still in Early Access, and his numbers below are the main branch's, v0.107.1 (Jun 19, 2026). Every card is on Regent Cards, and how guides play him is on Regent Guide.

Who the Regent is

The Regent is an alien prince who came to the Spire looking for excitement. His in-game description reads "Heir to the Throne of Stars. Wields cosmic powers but his minions do the work." (Spire Codex), and Mega Crit's introduction says he "has traveled long and far on his quest for excitement" (December 2025 Neowsletter).

He was the second new character Mega Crit revealed. The Necrobinder was "the first new character we announced for Slay the Spire 2" in October 2025 (Mega Crit's October 2025 Neowsletter), and the Regent followed in the December 2025 Neowsletter. The Steam store counts five characters, "two of whom who are brand new" (Steam store); the other is the Necrobinder. More on the cast is on Characters and Lore and Story.

How to unlock the Regent

The Regent unlocks after one run as the Silent, whether that run is won or lost. TheGamer and PCGamesN give the same chain: the Ironclad is available from the start, a run as the Ironclad unlocks the Silent, a run as the Silent unlocks the Regent, and a run as the Regent unlocks the Necrobinder (TheGamer, Mar 6, 2026; PCGamesN, Apr 28, 2026).

In the game the unlock is an Epoch on the Timeline. "Anomalous Planet", earned by playing a run as the Silent, opens the Regent (Spire Codex, epochs). Since v0.100.0 (Mar 20, 2026), Epochs cannot be earned in Daily or Custom runs, so the run must be a normal one. The whole system is on Unlocks and the Timeline.

Three of his own Epochs add cards to his pool, per Spire Codex: I Arrive (beat Act 1 as the Regent), Friends (kill 15 Elites) and Little King (beat Ascension 1); the cards are listed on Regent Cards. Grand Strategy, for beating Act 3, opens Ascension for him.

Starting deck and relic

The Regent starts with 75 HP, 99 Gold, 3 Energy and 10 cards: 4 Strike, 4 Defend, Falling Star and Venerate (Spire Codex, game data v0.107.1). His Strike deals 6 damage (9 upgraded) and his Defend gives 5 Block (8 upgraded), the same as every character's (Spire Codex, cards).

Falling Star is his starter attack. It costs 0 Energy plus 2 Stars and reads "Deal 8 damage. Apply 1 Weak. Apply 1 Vulnerable.", 12 damage upgraded (Spire Codex: Falling Star); Mega Crit's v0.101.0 notes raised it from 7(11) to 8(12).

Venerate is his starter Star card: 1 Energy for 2 Stars, 3 upgraded (Spire Codex: Venerate). TheGamer's Regent build guide lists it the same way, "1 / Gain 2 Stars" (TheGamer).

His starter relic, Divine Right, gives 3 Stars at the start of each combat (PCGamesN). Early guides called it "Crown of Stars", a preview name.

Stars

Stars are the Regent's second resource, spent alongside Energy. Mega Crit describes them as "a second resource alongside Energy" that some cards spend and others scale with, and says "Stars don't deplete at end of turn and have no cap" (December 2025 Neowsletter). TheGamer puts the difference plainly: "Unlike Energy, Star count isn't restored at the start of each turn" (TheGamer's Regent beginner's guide, Mar 10, 2026).

A card with a Star cost shows it beside its Energy cost and needs both. Reflect costs 1 Energy plus 3 Stars, Comet 0 Energy plus 5 Stars, and Seven Stars 2 Energy plus 7 Stars (Spire Codex, cards). Effects that make a card "free to play" waive its Star cost too: v0.100.0 did so for Discovery, and v0.101.0 changed several "Costs 0 Energy" effects to "Free to Play" for the same reason.

Mobalytics' Regent guide sorts his cards into Star generation (Venerate, Glow, Hidden Cache, Royal Gamble) and Star payoffs (Reflect, Astral Pulse, Comet, Falling Star) (Mobalytics, JapaneseExport, Jun 17, 2026).

Forge and the Sovereign Blade

Forge is the Regent's other mechanic: it creates and grows a sword card, the Sovereign Blade. The in-game glossary reads "The first time you Forge each combat, add Sovereign Blade into your Hand. Adds additional damage to Sovereign Blade." (Mobalytics' keywords list, Mar 17, 2026). A card that says "Forge 9" adds 9 damage to the Blade.

The Sovereign Blade is a colorless 2-Energy Attack with Retain that deals 10 damage plus everything Forged into it; its upgrade lowers the cost to 1 (Spire Codex: Sovereign Blade; December 2025 Neowsletter). After it is played it "cycles through your deck, so you may play it several times in one fight" (PCGamesN's Regent guide, Apr 8, 2026), and there is normally only one, unless Heirloom Hammer copies it (TheGamer).

Several Powers change the Blade itself. Seeking Edge makes it hit ALL enemies, Sword Sage gives it Replay 1 (since v0.105.0), Parry gives it 10 Block, 14 upgraded (reworked in v0.104.0, so Dexterity and Frail apply), and Conqueror doubles its damage for a turn (Spire Codex, cards). In co-op, the multiplayer card Hammer Time makes all allies Forge whenever he does.

Minions, created cards and Colorless

The Regent's third theme is cards he makes during a fight. Mega Crit wrote that "some cards transform other cards into disposable Minions that attack and defend for him", and that he "can create and interact with colorless cards" (December 2025 Neowsletter).

Three cards turn other cards into Minions, each a 0-cost token that Exhausts, per Spire Codex: BEGONE! makes Minion Strike (6 damage, draw 1), CHARGE!! makes two Minion Dive Bombs (13 damage each), and GUARDS!!! turns any number of cards into Minion Sacrifice (8 Block). Others add Colorless cards, among them Quasar, Manifest Authority, Bundle of Joy and Spectrum Shift. Arsenal (1 Strength) and Pillar of Creation (3 Block) pay off whenever he creates a card. The Colorless pool is on Colorless Cards.

Ancient starter relic and Ancient cards

The Regent's starter relic has an Ancient version, Divine Destiny: "At the start of each combat, gain 6 Stars." (Spire Codex, relics). It replaces Divine Right when the player takes Touch of Orobas from the Ancient Orobas, whose text reads "Upon pickup, replace your starter Relic with an Ancient version." On the public beta since v0.108.0 (Jul 3, 2026) it gives 7 Stars. The Ancients are on Neow and the Ancients.

He has two Ancient-rarity cards, Meteor Shower and The Sealed Throne (Spire Codex, cards). Meteor Shower costs 0 Energy plus 2 Stars and deals 14 damage to ALL enemies (21 upgraded) with 2 Weak and Vulnerable to ALL enemies. The Sealed Throne is a Power costing 1 Energy plus 3 Stars (0 Energy upgraded since v0.106.0) that gives 1 Star whenever he plays a card. The Ancient relic Archaic Tooth transforms "a starter card into an Ancient version" (v0.103.0 notes).

Regent relics

Seven relics appear only for the Regent in v0.107.1 data (Spire Codex, relics):

Relic Rarity Effect
Fencing Manual Common Forge 10 at the start of combat
Galactic Dust Uncommon 10 Block for every 10 Stars spent
Regalite Uncommon Whenever you create a card, gain 2 Block
Lunar Pastry Rare Gain 1 Star at the end of each turn
Mini Regent Rare The first Star spent each turn gives 1 Strength
Orange Dough Rare 2 random Colorless cards at the start of combat
Vitruvian Minion Shop Cards containing "Minion" deal double damage and gain double Block

Source: Spire Codex, relics (game data, v0.107.1), read Oct 26, 2026. Regalite changed on the public beta: since v0.110.0 it gives Block only the first time a card is created each turn, 4 Block since v0.111.0. Every relic is on Relics.

Archetypes guides name

Guides agree on two main Regent builds, Stars and Forge. PCGamesN calls Stars the main one and says Colorless, Vigor and Minion cards "only supplement the deck" (PCGamesN's Regent guide, Apr 8, 2026). Its Stars build takes Gather Light, Glow, Hidden Cache, Solar Strike and Knockout Blow early, then payoffs such as Comet, Reflect, Gamma Blast and Seven Stars; its Forge build takes Wrought in War, Spoils of Battle, Furnace, Summon Forth, Seeking Edge and Bulwark, but only on a solid base.

GameSpot's build is Stars with Stardust as the payoff (GameSpot, Mar 13, 2026), and Pocket Tactics lists a Star build and a Heavenly Drill build (Pocket Tactics, Sep 30, 2026). The builds in full are on Regent Guide.

How hard and how strong he is

Guides rate the Regent among the hardest characters. Game Rant ranks him the hardest of the five, "a glass cannon" whose Sovereign Blade builds are slow and whose Star builds need near-perfect play (Game Rant, Mar 10, 2026), and PCGamesN calls him "the most difficult of the five heroes" (PCGamesN). TheGamer puts him with the Defect as the hardest pair, both managing a second resource, but suggests learning him first because Stars are simpler than Orbs (TheGamer, Mar 9, 2026).

The published tier lists put him in the middle. PCGamesN's character tier list (Apr 28, 2026) has him in B, saying he has the highest skill ceiling but a consistency problem and is "nearly broken" in all-Regent co-op parties (PCGamesN). Pocket Tactics' list (Oct 5, 2026) also has him in B, weak early, with two resources making bad hands more likely (Pocket Tactics).

Changes by patch

The Regent has had more buffs than anyone. With Major Update #1, Mega Crit wrote that "his card pool has seen more buffs than any other character with just a couple of nerfs, which should address concerns about him feeling weaker than the other characters" (Major Update #1, v0.103.2, Apr 17, 2026).

The betas from v0.100.0 (Mar 20, 2026) to v0.107.0 (Jun 4, 2026) reworked Glow, BEGONE!, Arsenal, Parry and Sword Sage, made Void Form Ethereal, raised Falling Star to 8(12) and Kingly Kick to 27(35), split Astral Pulse into 6(8) damage twice and cut Reflect to 15(20) Block; v0.101.0 was the patch PCGamesN headlined as the one that "rescues the Regent". All of these reached the main branch with Major Update #2, v0.107.1 on Jun 19, 2026. Each card's changes are in the tables on Regent Cards.

The public beta has more that is not on the main branch. v0.108.0 raised Devastate to 35(45), cut Resonance's Star cost to 2 and added the multiplayer cards Plot and Constellation; v0.109.0 added the multiplayer card Tutor; v0.111.0 cut Alignment's Star cost back to 2. Every update is on Patches and Updates.

Compared with the first game

The Regent is new to the series: he was not in Slay the Spire (2019), whose four characters were the Ironclad, the Silent, the Defect and the Watcher (PCGamesN). Stars, Forge and the Sovereign Blade are mechanics Mega Crit introduced with him (December 2025 Neowsletter). Other changes are on Differences from Slay the Spire.
