Slay the Spire 2 1.0 release: Sep 2027Not announced: our best guess from Mega Crit's 1 to 2 year Early Access plan.
Best guessMega Crit's Early Access FAQ on Steam says it will stay in Early Access "Until the game feels great! Last time we thought it would be about a year and it took about 1.5 years. So perhaps in the same 1 - 2 year range." We count 18 months from the Mar 5, 2026 Early Access launch, as the first game took, to the first Thursday of Sep 2027 (Mega Crit ships on Thursdays) at 10 AM Pacific, the hour of the Early Access launch. Defect Cards

The Defect has 88 cards in Slay the Spire 2's main branch (v0.107.1): 4 Basic, 20 Common, 36 Uncommon, 26 Rare and 2 Ancient, two of them multiplayer only. This page lists every one with its cost, effect, upgrade and patch changes, and the key cards guides name for Orbs, Status and Claw.

The Defect has 88 cards in Slay the Spire 2: 4 Basic, 20 Common, 36 Uncommon, 26 Rare and 2 Ancient, by the count of the game data that Spire Codex reads from the live main branch, v0.107.1 ("Major Update #2", Jun 19, 2026). The tables below list each card's cost, type, effect and upgrade, with the patches that changed it; numbers changed only on the opt-in public beta (v0.108.0 to v0.111.0) are labeled beta and are not live for most players. Most Defect cards Channel, Evoke or strengthen Orbs, the charges explained on the Defect page; the rest belong to its Status and Claw archetypes. Two cards, Energy Surge and Ignition, appear only in co-op.

Quick facts

Character The Defect
Cards 88: 4 Basic, 20 Common, 36 Uncommon, 26 Rare, 2 Ancient
Types 29 Attacks, 39 Skills, 20 Powers
Starting deck 4 Strike, 4 Defend, Zap, Dualcast (game data)
Ancient cards Quadcast and Biased Cognition
Multiplayer only Energy Surge and Ignition
Unlocked by Epochs Loop, Null, Consuming Shadow; Barrage, Flak Cannon, Smokestack; TURBO, Scavenge, Helix Drill (Spire Codex)
Version Main branch v0.107.1 (Mega Crit); beta changes labeled

How to read the tables

Each table gives the card's main-branch cost and text, then its upgraded text. A cost like "1 (0)" means 1 Energy, 0 once upgraded; "Same text; cost 0" means the upgrade only lowers the cost, and "loses Exhaust" or "gains Innate" means it changes a keyword. X costs spend all your Energy. The Patch changes column links Mega Crit's notes: changes from v0.100.0 to v0.106.0 are live (they reached everyone with Major Update #1 and Major Update #2), and those marked beta are on the public beta only. Mobalytics' card database drops the Energy icons from its text and shows several Energy amounts as 1 (TURBO, Scavenge, Sunder), so its numbers are not used here (Mobalytics).

Basic cards

The Defect starts every run with these four, 10 cards in all (4 Strikes, 4 Defends, Zap and Dualcast).

Ancient cards come from the Ancients, not from card rewards. The Orobas relic Archaic Tooth transforms "a starter card into an Ancient version" (Mega Crit's v0.103.0 notes); Quadcast is Dualcast's four-Evoke counterpart. Neow and the Ancients lists what each Ancient offers.

Beta-only Defect cards

The public beta added three Defect cards for co-op in v0.108.0 (Jul 3, 2026). They are not on the main branch and are not counted above.

Source: Mega Crit: Beta Patch Notes - v0.108.0, Jul 3, 2026. The same patch made Ignition Uncommon. All co-op cards are on Multiplayer Cards.

Starter cards: Zap and Dualcast

Zap and Dualcast are the Defect's first Orb tools. Zap Channels 1 Lightning and Dualcast Evokes your rightmost Orb twice; both cost 1 Energy and upgrade to 0 (game data). With Cracked Core's free Lightning at the start of each combat, a first-turn Dualcast deals 16 damage, two Lightning Evokes of 8 (orb values).

Key Orb cards, as guides name them

Guides agree that Focus and Orb slots are what the Defect's best decks are built on, and differ on almost everything else.

  • PCGamesN (Apr 7, 2026) builds Orbs in three stages: early Ball Lightning, Cold Snap, Lightning Rod and Focused Strike; then Glacier, Chill, Hailstorm and Hotfix; late Capacitor, Defragment, Synchronize and Voltaic. It calls Defragment the best Focus card and Voltaic the finisher (PCGamesN).
  • Mobalytics (Mar 13, 2026) builds a simple Orb deck from Ball Lightning, Cold Snap, Coolheaded, Barrage, Compile Driver, Lightning Rod, Glacier, Chaos, Capacitor, Loop, Thunder and Hailstorm, with Defragment ("take as many of these as you can"), Modded, Multi-Cast, Voltaic and Tesla Coil as payoffs (Mobalytics).
  • Pocket Tactics (Jun 29, 2026) names Defragment (ideally two, upgraded), Voltaic, Modded, Multi-Cast, Buffer and All for One as the best Defect cards (Pocket Tactics).
  • Game Rant (Mar 10, 2026) lists Capacitor, Defragment, Biased Cognition, Coolant, Glacier, Chill, Hailstorm and Voltaic for its Focus build (Game Rant).

Key Status and Claw cards

The Status archetype adds Status cards to your deck and rewards each one. Its makers are Boost Away (Dazed), Gunk Up (Slimed), TURBO (Void), Overclock (Burn) and Fight Through (2 Wounds); its payoffs are Smokestack, Iteration, Compact, Flak Cannon, Rocket Punch and Trash to Treasure (game data). Game Rant's Status build centers on Smokestack, Iteration, Flak Cannon and Trash to Treasure (Game Rant). The Status cards themselves are on Curses, Statuses and Quest Cards.

Claw decks play many 0-cost Attacks and grow every Claw. Mobalytics' Claw deck takes Claw, Momentum Strike, Beam Cell, Go for the Eyes, Scrape, FTL, Skim and Hologram, then All for One, Feral and Machine Learning (Mobalytics); Pocket Tactics' Claw build wants at least two Claws with Go for the Eyes, Beam Cell, All for One and Scrape (Pocket Tactics, Sep 30, 2026). PCGamesN says Status and Claw "lose effectiveness at higher Ascension levels" (PCGamesN).

Defect card tier lists

The two published Defect card tier lists disagree sharply, so each is given as its own. Card Tier List compares every character's lists.

  • PCGamesN (Apr 7, 2026), S tier: Hologram, Chill, Double Energy, Synchronize, Glacier, Capacitor, Modded, Supercritical, Genetic Algorithm, Voltaic, Coolant, Defragment and Echo Form. D tier: Beam Cell, Gunk Up, Boost Away, Chaos, Compact, Feral and Helix Drill; Claw itself is C (PCGamesN).
  • Mobalytics (Aug 12, 2026), S tier: Echo Form, Defragment, Shatter, Glacier, Null, Machine Learning, Genetic Algorithm, Trash to Treasure, Darkness, Modded, Chill, Supercritical, Synchronize, Barrage, Capacitor, Buffer, Boot Sequence, Overclock, Ice Lance, Loop and Compact. D tier: Sweeping Beam, Thunder, Focused Strike, Scrape, Claw, Chaos and Hyperbeam (Mobalytics).

Where they differ most: PCGamesN puts Hologram, Double Energy and Voltaic in S and Focused Strike in A, while Mobalytics rates Hologram and Double Energy B, Voltaic C and Focused Strike D, and puts Shatter, Null and Overclock in S. Both list Defragment, Glacier, Chill, Capacitor, Modded, Supercritical, Synchronize, Genetic Algorithm and Echo Form in S tier.
