Curses, Statuses and Quest Cards
Slay the Spire 2 has 18 curses, 16 statuses and 3 Quest cards on its main branch (v0.107.1). Curses stay in your deck until removed (Eternal ones, such as Ascender's Bane from Ascension 5, never leave), statuses last one combat, and Quest cards (Byrdonis Egg, Lantern Key, Spoils Map) pay out when you finish their task.
Slay the Spire 2 has 18 curses, 16 status cards and 3 Quest cards on its live main branch, v0.107.1, by the count of the game data that Spire Codex reads. Curses are harmful cards that stay in your deck for the run until you remove them, and six of them are Eternal, which "Cannot be removed or transformed from your Deck" (game data): among them Ascender's Bane, the curse every run starts with from Ascension 5. Statuses are added during a combat by enemies or by your own cards and last only that fight. Quest cards, new in Slay the Spire 2, are Unplayable cards from events that reward you when you fulfill their task. The game is in Early Access, so this page gives main-branch text, with public-beta changes labeled.

Source: Spire Codex (game data, v0.107.1), read Oct 26, 2026. "No effect text" means the game data gives only keywords.
Nine curses have no effect text in the game data, only keywords: Ascender's Bane, Clumsy, Curse of the Bell, Folly, Greed, Injury, Poor Sleep, Spore Mind and Writhe. Their harm is that they take up a draw and a place in your Hand, and Mega Crit has not published any further effect for them. Mobalytics' card database prints "Unplayable. Ethereal." for every curse, a placeholder that is wrong for most of them (Mobalytics), so its curse text is not used here.
Where curses come from
Most curses are the price of a reward you chose. From the game data's events and relics (Spire Codex: events, relics) and OP.GG's event pages (beta v0.111.0 data):
| Curse | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Ascender's Bane | Every run at Ascension 5 and higher (PCGamesN) |
| Bad Luck | Reflections event, "Shatter": duplicate your Deck and receive Bad Luck |
| Clumsy | "This or That?" event: add Clumsy and obtain a random Relic |
| Curse of the Bell | Mega Crit has not said; Darv's relic Calling Bell gives "a unique Curse and 3 Relics" (OP.GG), and Curse of the Bell is the only curse named for a bell |
| Debt | Crystal Sphere event, "Payment Plan": gain a Debt and Divine 6 times (OP.GG) |
| Decay | Grave of the Forgotten ("Confront with Truth") and The Lost Wisp ("Capture the Wisp") events |
| Doubt, Shame, Regret | The Trial event, by your verdict (OP.GG) |
| Enthralled | The relic Blood-Soaked Rose, which also gives 1 Energy at the start of each turn |
| Folly | Vakuu's relic Preserved Fog (Mega Crit's v0.100.0 notes) |
| Greed | Sunken Treasury event (v0.100.0 notes) and Neow's Cursed Pearl, with 333 Gold (OP.GG) |
| Guilty | The Trial and the Wellspring event ("Bathe": remove 1 card, add Guilty) |
| Injury | Punch Off event ("Nab": a random Relic) and Neow's Hefty Tablet, with a Rare card (Mega Crit) |
| Normality | Field of Man-Sized Holes event, "Resist": remove 2 cards and add Normality (OP.GG) |
| Poor Sleep | Unrest Site event, "Rest Anyways": heal to full HP |
| Spore Mind | Luminous Choir event, "Reach into the Flesh": remove 2 cards and add Spore Mind |
| Writhe | Not published |
Random curses come from three more places. Neow's Bones gives 2 random Neow relics and 1 random Curse from "a list of ten curses", and Mega Crit's engineer Ed explained in Major Update #2 that players were right it gave Debt too often before the v0.107.1 random-number fix. Vakuu's relics add 2 random curses (Sere Talon on the main branch; on the beta since v0.109.0, Distinguished Cape instead). Game Rant says the Act 2 boss Knowledge Demon "inflicts curses that have some seriously punishing effects" (Game Rant).
Ascender's Bane and Ascension 5
Ascender's Bane is the curse Ascension 5 puts in your deck: the level's text is "Start each run cursed." (PCGamesN). The card is Ethereal, Unplayable and Eternal and has no other text (game data). Unplayable means it can never be played; Ethereal means that if it is still in your Hand at the end of the turn it is Exhausted for the rest of that combat; Eternal means the Merchant, events and transforms cannot take it out. So it costs you one dead draw per combat at most, every combat of the run. Ascension effects stack, so it stays at every level from 5 to 10 (Ascension).
One bug could make more of it. Until beta v0.108.0, the Colorless Power Entropy could transform curses into Ascender's Bane.
How to remove curses
Removing a curse works like removing any card. The Merchant removes one card per visit (Game Rant) at a price that rises 25 Gold each time (PCGamesN); Mega Crit has not published the first removal's price. From Ascension 6, Inflation, removal starts at 100 Gold and rises 50 (Mega Crit's v0.102.0 notes). Merchant and Rest Sites covers the shop.
Events and relics remove cards too: Neow's Precise Scissors (1 card) and Precarious Shears (2 cards for 16 HP), the Wellspring (1 card, but it adds Guilty), Luminous Choir and Field of Man-Sized Holes (2 cards each, for another curse), the Ancient relic Biiig Hug (4 cards, then a Soot each time you shuffle) and the Meat Cleaver, which lets you Cook at a Rest Site: "Remove 2 cards from your Deck and gain 9 Max HP" (game data; OP.GG). The Cook's Max HP is 5 on the beta since v0.109.0.
Some curses leave by themselves or cannot leave at all. Guilty is "Removed from your Deck after 5 combats" (game data). Ascender's Bane, Bad Luck, Curse of the Bell, Enthralled, Folly and Greed are Eternal and stay all run. Transforms ("Transformed cards become a random card of any rarity") turn a non-Eternal curse into a random card, which may be better or worse.
You can also make curses pay. The event relic Darkstone Periapt gives 6 Max HP per Curse (OP.GG), and Exhaust and Ethereal effects clear them out of a single combat.
Statuses
| Status | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Beckon | 1 | At the end of your turn, if this is in your Hand, lose 6 HP. |
| Burn | Unplayable | At the end of your turn, if this is in your Hand, take 2 damage. |
| Dazed | Unplayable | Ethereal. |
| Debris | 1 | Exhaust. |
| Frantic Escape | 1 | Get farther away. Increase Sandpit by 1. Increase the cost of this card by 1. |
| Infection | Unplayable | At the end of your turn, if this is in your Hand, take 3 damage. |
| Slimed | 1 | Exhaust. Draw 1 card. |
| Soot | Unplayable | No effect text. |
| Toxic | 1 | Exhaust. At the end of your turn, if this is in your Hand, take 5 damage. |
| Void | Unplayable | Ethereal. Whenever you draw this card, lose 1 Energy. |
| Wither | Unplayable | At the end of your turn, if this is in your Hand, take 3 damage. Upgraded: At the end of your turn, if this is in your Hand, take 6 damage. |
| Wound | Unplayable | No effect text. |
| Disintegration | Unplayable | At the end of your turn, take 6 damage. |
| Mind Rot | Unplayable | Draw 1 fewer card each turn. |
| Sloth | Unplayable | You cannot play more than 3 cards each turn. |
| Waste Away | Unplayable | Gain 1 less Energy per turn. |

Statuses last one combat, and your own cards make some of them. The Defect's Status archetype adds Dazed (Boost Away), Slimed (Gunk Up), Void (TURBO), Burn (Overclock) and Wounds (Fight Through) on purpose, and its Smokestack, Iteration, Compact and Flak Cannon pay you back (game data; Defect Cards).
Where statuses come from
Enemies add most statuses. The game data names these sources (Spire Codex: cards and monsters):
| Status | Added by |
|---|---|
| Beckon | Soul Fysh, an Underdocks boss, with its opening move Beckon |
| Burn | Mecha Knight and Test Subject #C14; the Defect's Overclock |
| Dazed | Chomper, Eye with Teeth and Haunted Ship; the Defect's Boost Away; the event relic Tea of Discourtesy, 2 Dazed next combat (OP.GG) |
| Frantic Escape | The Insatiable, a Hive boss: "Get farther away. Increase Sandpit by 1." (Mega Crit) |
| Infection | Phrog Parasite and Wriggler |
| Slimed | Leaf Slimes, Twig Slime (M) and Slimed Berserker; the Defect's Gunk Up |
| Soot | The Ancient relic Biiig Hug, whenever you shuffle your Draw Pile |
| Toxic | Myte |
| Void | The Defect's TURBO |
| Wither | Aeonglass, a Glory boss |
| Wound | Vantom, an Overgrowth boss; the Defect's Fight Through |
| Debris, Disintegration, Mind Rot, Sloth, Waste Away | Not published by Mega Crit or an allowed source; the game data has debuffs of the same names as the last four |
Wither arrived with Aeonglass, the Act 3 boss since v0.107.1; since v0.106.1 Wither cannot be upgraded and is not kept in Hand by Retain. PC Gamer's Austin Wood calls Aeonglass "markedly harder" than the other Act 3 bosses because it fills your deck with status cards that deal ramping damage to you, and Evan Lahti says the Silent's Sly cards answer it (PC Gamer, Sep 18, 2026). Haunted Ship applies Dazed since v0.101.0. Bosses and Enemies give each fight.
Quest cards
Quest cards are new in Slay the Spire 2. Mega Crit announced them in its March 2025 Neowsletter: "We're adding a new type of card called Quests. Obtain these rare cards and fulfill their requirements and you will be greatly rewarded." They are Unplayable cards you receive at events (Mobalytics), so they sit in your deck as dead draws until the task is done.
| Quest card | Text | Where you get it | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Byrdonis Egg | "Can be hatched at a Rest Site." | Byrdonis Nest event, "Take the Egg" (or "Eat the Egg" for 7 Max HP) | Hatch it at a Rest Site for the Byrdpip relic, a companion in battle, and Byrd Swoop, a 0-cost Attack dealing 14 damage (18 upgraded) |
| Lantern Key | "Unlocks a special event in the next Act." | The Lantern Key event in the Hive: "Keep the Key" means fighting the Mysterious Knight; "Return the Key" pays 100 Gold | War Historian, Repy in Act 3: free him for History Course, or open the chest for 2 Potions and 2 Relics |
| Spoils Map | "Marks a site of 600 extra Gold in the next Act." | The Legends Were True event, "Nab the Map" | 600 Gold at the chest marked with a red X in the next Act; since v0.104.0, 600 Gold per copy |

Players split almost evenly on the egg and mostly sold the key. In its April 2026 Neowsletter, Mega Crit said 51% of players took the Byrdonis Egg and 49% ate it, 56% returned the Lantern Key for Gold, and 88% of those who kept it and met Repy freed him for his tome. History Course was cut back on the beta in v0.109.0 to repeat only Attacks, and holding several Lantern Keys makes "something special" happen at Repy in single player since v0.105.0.
A fourth Quest card is on the beta only. Neow's Dowsing Rod, added in v0.109.0 (Jul 17, 2026), adds Dowsing: "After entering 5 more ? rooms, transform this into Abundance", an Ancient Skill that offers 1 of 3 Upgraded Powers, free to play that turn. Events gives every event's choices.
Deprecated Card
One more Status exists only for saved runs. If an update removes a card that is in a run in progress, the card becomes "Deprecated Card", a Status that reads "Draw 1 card. Remove this from your Deck. Exhaust." (Mega Crit's v0.100.0 notes).

AscensionSlay the Spire 2 has 10 Ascension levels, not 20: each one stacks a new handicap, from Swarming Elites at Ascension 1 to Double Boss at Ascension 10, and you unlock the next level by winning on your highest one. Ascension 6 has been Inflation (pricier card removal) since Apr 17, 2026; it was Gloom (fewer rest sites) at launch.
-
Merchant and Rest SitesIn Slay the Spire 2 the Merchant sells 5 character cards, 2 Colorless cards, 3 relics, 3 potions and one card removal per visit, and Rest Sites let you Rest to heal or Smith to Upgrade a card, with more actions from relics. Card removal gets 25 Gold dearer each time, and from Ascension 6 (Inflation) it starts at 100 Gold and rises by 50; Mega Crit has not published the base removal price or the Rest heal amount. -
DefectThe Defect is the fifth and last character to unlock in Slay the Spire 2 (end a run as the Necrobinder, win or lose), an automaton that fights with Orbs and Focus. It starts with 75 HP, 99 Gold, 3 Energy, 3 Orb slots, 4 Strikes, 4 Defends, Zap, Dualcast and the relic Cracked Core, which Channels 1 Lightning at the start of each combat. -
Defect CardsThe Defect has 88 cards in Slay the Spire 2's main branch (v0.107.1): 4 Basic, 20 Common, 36 Uncommon, 26 Rare and 2 Ancient, two of them multiplayer only. This page lists every one with its cost, effect, upgrade and patch changes, and the key cards guides name for Orbs, Status and Claw.

BossesSlay the Spire 2 has 12 bosses in Early Access, three per act: Ceremonial Beast, The Kin and Vantom (Overgrowth), Lagavulin Matriarch, Soul Fysh and Waterfall Giant (Underdocks), Kaiser Crab, Knowledge Demon and The Insatiable (Hive), and Aeonglass, Queen and Test Subject (Glory).
-
EnemiesSlay the Spire 2's normal enemies differ in each of its four areas (the Overgrowth and Underdocks in Act 1, the Hive in Act 2 and Glory in Act 3), with HP that rises at Ascension 8 and damage that rises at Ascension 9. The in-game Bestiary, added in v0.105.0, shows the moves of every monster you have met.
