Lore and Story
Slay the Spire 2 is set when the Spire reopens after lying dormant for 1,000 years; Neow, "Mother of Resurrection (Exiled)", sends five climbers up it, and the story comes in fragments through the Timeline's Epochs, the Ancients and each character's lines to the Architect at the top.
Slay the Spire 2 is set when the Spire wakes up again: in Mega Crit's words on the Steam store, "For 1,000 years, the Spire lay dormant, its secrets buried and its horrors forgotten. Now, it has reopened, hungrier and more dangerous than ever, devouring all who dare to ascend." Neow, the whale who blesses each climb, returns from the first game, five climbers with "their own cards, motives, and secrets" go up the tower, and the story is told in pieces rather than in cutscenes: through the Timeline's Epochs, the Ancients you meet and the lines each character trades with the Architect at the top. Slay the Spire 2 is in Early Access, and Mega Crit is still writing its ending.

The Spire reopens
The sequel's premise is that the Spire was shut and has opened again. PCGamesN's Christian Vaz (updated Apr 28, 2026) sums it up: the first game's heroes, the Ironclad, the Silent, the Defect and the Watcher, "helped shut the door on the tower filled with evil beings", and the Spire has now reopened after 1,000 years, waking Neow. The store adds that players should "uncover the truths hidden at its peak".
Mega Crit tells the story through play, not exposition. The store says the history of the Spire and its inhabitants "can now be discovered in entirely new ways": you "unlock fragments of its mysterious timeline and encounter the most ancient of its residents through your myriad attempts". Those fragments are Epochs, paid for with the score from each run (v0.110.0); the Unlocks and the Timeline page lists them.
The Epoch names hint at the story. Mega Crit's v0.108.0 notes list Epochs that got new art, among them Friendship, Poisoner, Hello Hello!, The 12, Arise, Slumber, Spireborn, The Architect, The Pact, Annihilation, To Kill and Futility, and the Defect's unlock Epoch is "Booting Up" (v0.106.0).
Neow, Mother of Resurrection
Neow is the giant whale who starts every climb, and resurrection is her role. PCGamesN's Ken Allsop (Nov 14, 2025) describes her as "a giant whale" who greets the player at the start of every run in both games, because she is in charge of resurrection. In Slay the Spire 2 her title in the game's text is "Mother of Resurrection (Exiled)" (OP.GG).
Neow may not be the friend she seems. According to the Epochs, as PCGamesN's Gina Lees reads them, Neow was jealous of the Architect, another Ancient, and made a concoction called Blight, which she gave him "as a special tea to help him sleep"; the Blight instead became an uncontrollable force that swept the land. Mega Crit has added nothing to this outside the game. Her blessings are on the Neow and the Ancients page.
The Ancients
The Ancients are beings as old as the Spire. Mega Crit introduced them in its November 2025 Neowsletter, and PCGamesN's summary is that they have existed since the Spire's beginning, gathering wisdom and power, with motives Mega Crit says players may learn more about over time. Seven more besides Neow greet you at the start of Acts 2 and 3, each with a title in the game's text (OP.GG):
| Ancient | Title | Act |
|---|---|---|
| Neow | Mother of Resurrection (Exiled) | 1 |
| Orobas | Living Rainbow | 2 |
| Pael | Melting Dragon | 2 |
| Tezcatara | It Which Feeds the Fire | 2 |
| Nonupeipe | Serendipity Incarnate | 3 |
| Tanx | Khimera King | 3 |
| Vakuu | The First Demon | 3 |
| Darv | The Hoarder | 2 or 3 |

The Ancients remember you. Vakuu tells you how many times you have visited him (made accurate in v0.107.0), and Darv, a collector, greets a first visitor with "Oh! Come to see my collection!? Take anything from that pile over there, put it to good use!" (OP.GG). PCGamesN calls Tezcatara "A warm, shining light in the darkness of the Spire."
The five climbers
Each character comes with a one-line story on the select screen. The Steam store promises each a "secret backstory" you uncover as you play, and the game's descriptions, as Spire Codex (game data, v0.107.1) records them, are below. The Characters page covers how each plays.
| Character | In-game description |
|---|---|
| The Ironclad | "The last soldier of the Ironclads. Crushes foes with sword and flame against his will." |
| The Silent | "A huntress from outside the Spire. Ready to stab and poison anything in her way." |
| The Regent | "Heir to the Throne of Stars. Wields cosmic powers but his minions do the work." |
| The Necrobinder | "A Spireborn lich who seeks revenge. Calls upon her trusty left hand, Osty, in combat." |
| The Defect | "An automaton eternally modifying itself to survive. Deploys Orb technology when it must fight." |
Source: Spire Codex (game data, v0.107.1), read Oct 26, 2026; the Necrobinder's line also shows on Steam's own screenshot of her select screen.
The Ironclad
The Ironclad is the last of a soldier order, fighting "against his will". He returns from the first game in a new design, and the Architect greets him as the arch demon's thrall, per PCGamesN.
The Silent
The Silent is a huntress from outside the Spire, back from the first game. She says nothing at the top; the Architect's response is "Not even an introduction?"
The Regent
The Regent is new: Mega Crit's December 2025 Neowsletter calls him "a domineering, arrogant alien from a distant planet" who "has traveled long and far on his quest for excitement", the heir to the Throne of Stars.
The Necrobinder
The Necrobinder is new, and her backstory is the one published in most detail. Mega Crit's October 2025 Neowsletter introduced "a sassy lich who relies upon a giant, reanimated hand called Osty", and PCGamesN's Christian Vaz (updated Apr 7, 2026) tells her origin: "12 explorers set out on an expedition to save their town", to stop monsters from the Spire reaching The Capital; "Though they never made it home, two of them gave birth to a child inside the Spire", and after "a forbidden grimoire" changed her life, that child became the Necrobinder. She is "Spireborn", and she "seeks revenge".
The Defect
The Defect is an automaton that keeps rebuilding itself to survive, back from the first game in a new design. Its lines to the Architect come out garbled, and he replies that he would need to be made to repair it.
The Architect
Spoiler note: this section reveals the end of the climb.
The Architect waits at the top and ends every run. After the Act 3 boss, he kills your character before you can play a card; PC Gamer's Evan Lahti calls him "presumably the designer of the spire". The Architect page covers the scene in full.
His exchanges with the climbers carry much of the story. In PCGamesN's summary, the Necrobinder accuses him of killing her parents and her friend, and he answers, "You cannot change the past with anger"; the Regent says he has had enough of the Architect's manners, and the Architect replies, "Something we can both agree on."
What is still unwritten
Mega Crit is shaping the ending around players' reactions. Casey Yano told PC Gamer (Apr 2, 2026) that the endings "aren't too designed at this time": "I like to read what people's theories are on what the characters are, if they're good or bad", and while "we do have kind of like a canonical idea of what is going to happen", the team makes "minor tweaks".
More of the Spire is coming. The September 2026 Neowsletter teased "another area of the Spire still shrouded in darkness" and the silhouette of "a small, floating, excitable being", and the roadmap lists a new character and alternate Acts 2 and 3 before "True Victory". Mega Crit has named neither the area nor the being. See Early Access and Roadmap.
Ties to the first game
Neow and three of the first game's heroes return; the Watcher does not. TheGamer confirms the roster is the Ironclad, the Silent, the Defect, the Regent and the Necrobinder, and the first game's Act 4 and its Heart have no counterpart yet. The Differences from Slay the Spire page lists the rest.
Some places nod to the past. The Underdocks' Trash Heap event offers "forgotten" relics and cards "from the past" (OP.GG), and Casey Yano wrote that the Overgrowth's Ceremonial Beast was based on the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke (June 2026 Neowsletter).
