Development begins (2021)
Mega Crit started Slay the Spire 2 "around May 2021," per its FAQ, a little over two years after the first game's 1.0 release on Jan 23, 2019. Casey Yano said the Ceremonial Beast was "the first boss design for Slay the Spire 2 (designed in 2021)", based on the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke. The studio's story is on Development History.
The Unity statement and the move to Godot (2023 to 2024)
The game's existence became public through an engine dispute. On Sep 13, 2023, reacting to Unity's Runtime Fee, Mega Crit made its "first-ever" public statement: "The Mega Crit team has been hard at work these past two-plus years on a new game", built in Unity, and it would migrate "unless the changes are completely reverted and TOS protections are put in place."
It moved. In October 2023 Mega Crit made Dancing Duelists, a deckbuilding autobattler built "in 3 weeks in the Godot Engine" to test switching, and in April 2024 it confirmed to IGN that Slay the Spire 2 had fully moved to Godot.
The announcement (Apr 10, 2024)
Slay the Spire 2 was announced on Apr 10, 2024 with an animated trailer, without gameplay, at the Triple-i Initiative showcase, for Steam Early Access in 2025, Game Informer reported. The trailer showed the Ironclad, the Silent and the new Necrobinder. Mega Crit thanked Evil Empire for the slot; it was not at Summer Game Fest that year or the next.
The Neowsletter and the first gameplay (2024)
Mega Crit began its monthly "Neowsletter" on Steam with the October 2024 issue, introducing the team and the new art direction. By December the game had passed 1 million Steam wishlists.
The first gameplay trailer premiered at The Game Awards on Dec 12, 2024, showing the Ironclad, the Silent, the Necrobinder and the Merchant's new shop. It ended with a "Still coming in 2025" gag, which community manager Demi Montes says she pushed for.
A reveal every month (2025)
Through 2025 each Neowsletter revealed a system. In order, per Mega Crit: Enchantments (February), Quest cards (March), Afflictions (April), the Silent's Sly keyword (May), Events (June), Colorless cards (July), relics and potions (August), alternate acts (September), the Necrobinder (October) and the Ancients (November). The Regent followed in the December 2025 Neowsletter. Each system has its own page: Enchantments and Afflictions, Curses, Statuses and Quest Cards, Events, Colorless Cards, Relics, Potions, Acts and the Map, Necrobinder, Neow and the Ancients and Regent.
The delay (Sep 11, 2025)
On Sep 11, 2025 Mega Crit moved Early Access "to a secret Thursday in March 2026," from its original fall 2025 window, in the September 2025 Neowsletter. It gave three reasons: "Some personal life stuff hit the team (everyone's okay!), we kept saying 'wouldn't it be cool if...' one too many times, and honestly, the game just needs more polish." It said the new window was chosen before Hollow Knight: Silksong's date was announced.
The date and co-op (Feb 19, 2026)
Mega Crit announced the date, Mar 5, 2026, on Feb 19, 2026 with the Early Access trailer, which also revealed co-op for up to 4 players. Game Informer reported that the trailer confirmed the Defect's return alongside the Ironclad, the Silent, the Necrobinder and the Regent, five characters, without the Watcher. Two days earlier Casey Yano had confirmed macOS at launch with a simple "Yes".
Launch day (Mar 5, 2026)
Early Access opened on Steam at 10 AM PST (18:00 UTC) on Mar 5, 2026, at $24.99, "same as StS1", with 14 languages. Mega Crit's launch post went up at 17:51 UTC: "Slay the Spire 2 is out NOW in Early Access!!" It called the game the result of "the past 5 years" of work. Bungie's Marathon launched the same day, and PCGamesN reported Steam store trouble under the load.
The first week made it, in GamingOnLinux's words, "the biggest roguelike deck-builder on Steam ever." SteamDB measured a peak of 574,638 concurrent players on Mar 8, 2026, and Mega Crit reported 3,000,000 units sold on Mar 13. Sales and reviews are on Reception and Sales.
Early Access updates (Mar to Aug 2026)
Mega Crit opened a public-beta branch on Mar 13, 2026 and has since moved beta changes to the main branch twice: Major Update #1 (v0.103.2, Apr 17, 2026) and Major Update #2 (v0.107.1, Jun 19, 2026). The betas v0.108.0 to v0.111.0 (Aug 14, 2026) are on the beta branch only. Every patch is on Patches and Updates.
What comes next
Mega Crit has announced no 1.0 date. Its store page gives a "1 - 2 year range" for Early Access, and its August 2026 Neowsletter named an Alternate Act 2 and a new character as the work in progress. The plan is on Early Access and Roadmap.

Development HistorySlay the Spire 2 is made by Mega Crit, the studio of Casey Yano and Anthony Giovannetti, which began it around May 2021 in Unity and moved it to the Godot engine after Unity's Runtime Fee in September 2023. Art director Marlowe Dobbe led a brighter, more animated look, and Mega Crit announced the game in April 2024, delayed it once and launched it in Early Access on Mar 5, 2026.
-
Enchantments and AfflictionsEnchantments are run-long bonuses added to single cards in Slay the Spire 2 (22 in the game data of v0.107.1, such as Corrupted, Glam and Sharp), mostly from events, shop relics and Ancients, and they never stack. Afflictions are their opposite: temporary penalties enemies put on your cards, such as Ringing, Bound and Smog.
-
Curses, Statuses and Quest CardsSlay the Spire 2 has 18 curses, 16 statuses and 3 Quest cards on its main branch (v0.107.1). Curses stay in your deck until removed (Eternal ones, such as Ascender's Bane from Ascension 5, never leave), statuses last one combat, and Quest cards (Byrdonis Egg, Lantern Key, Spoils Map) pay out when you finish their task.
-
EventsSlay the Spire 2 has 57 events in OP.GG's v0.111.0 beta data, plus 8 Ancients, met in ? rooms: shared events that can appear in several acts, and events tied to the Overgrowth, Underdocks, Hive or Glory. Each offers two or more choices, such as the Symbiote's Corrupted enchantment or Transform, and the Lantern Key that leads to an Act 3 reward. -
Colorless CardsSlay the Spire 2 has 64 Colorless cards on its main branch (v0.107.1), 39 Uncommon and 25 Rare, that any character can use; 11 of them appear only in co-op. You get them from the Merchant (2 a visit), Neow's Lead Paperweight, events, relics such as Dingy Rug and Toolbox, and cards that create them, such as Jack of All Trades and the Regent's.
-
RelicsSlay the Spire 2 has relics in seven rarities (Starter, Common, Uncommon, Rare, Shop, Event and Ancient), and OP.GG counts 298 in the game data of the v0.111.0 public beta. Each character starts with one starter relic that Orobas can upgrade to an Ancient version, and Ancient relics from Neow and the other Ancients replace the first game's boss relics.
