Potions
Slay the Spire 2 has 64 potions in OP.GG's v0.111.0 beta data (20 Common, 20 Uncommon, 20 Rare and 4 event or token potions), and you start each run with 3 potion slots, one fewer from Ascension 4 (Tight Belt). Fifteen character potions and six shared ones are unlocked through Epochs.
Slay the Spire 2 has 64 potions in OP.GG's potion list, read from the game data of the v0.111.0 public beta (Aug 14, 2026): 20 Common, 20 Uncommon, 20 Rare, and 4 that come only from events or relics. One of those, Ambergris, exists only on the public beta, so the main branch (v0.107.1, Jun 19, 2026) has 63. A potion is a one-use effect, and you start each run with 3 potion slots, per Mobalytics' beginner guide (Mar 19, 2026); Ascension 4 takes one away. Potions drop after fights, are sold by the Merchant and come from events and relics. The game is in Early Access, so potion effects can still change.

Fairy in a Bottle has one known exception. Mega Crit explained in Major Update #1 (Apr 17, 2026) that it triggers only when your HP reaches 0, so it does not save you when the Act 2 boss The Insatiable eats you, which is death "by any other means".
Event and token potions
Four potions never drop from normal rewards: three come from events and one from a relic.
| Potion | Where it comes from | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Ambergris | Neow's Sacrifice (Neow relic, public beta since v0.109.0) | Heal for 50% of your Max HP; if used in combat, take an extra turn |
| Foul Potion | Potion Courier event ("Grab Potions: Procure 3 Foul Potions") | Deal 12 damage to ALL players and enemies; throw it at the Merchant for 100 Gold instead |
| Glowwater Potion | Drowning Beacon event ("Bottle") | Exhaust your Hand and draw 10 cards |
| Potion-Shaped Rock | Petrified Toad relic, each combat (token) | Deal 15 damage |
Sources: OP.GG potion list and event pages for Potion Courier and Drowning Beacon (v0.111.0), read Oct 26, 2026; Mega Crit: Beta Patch Notes v0.109.0 (Jul 17, 2026).
The Foul Potion does not hit Osty, a wording Mega Crit fixed in v0.102.0 (Apr 3, 2026). Throwing one at the Merchant normally pays 100 Gold, but it can also start the secret fight with "The Merchant???", who has 165 HP and drops his relic stock, his rug and 300 Gold, per TheGamer (Mar 17, 2026). See Merchant and Rest Sites.
Potion slots and Tight Belt
Every run starts with 3 potion slots. Mobalytics advises using a potion when you are at the cap "in case you're offered another". Ascension 4, Tight Belt, reads "Start each run with one less potion slot", per PCGamesN (Mar 10, 2026), so from Ascension 4 up you start with 2.
Relics change the count. Per OP.GG's relic list and its Ancient pages (v0.111.0 data):
| Relic | Rarity or source | Potion effect |
|---|---|---|
| Potion Belt | Common | Upon pickup, gain 2 potion slots |
| Phial Holster | Neow | Gain 1 potion slot and procure 2 random Potions |
| Alchemical Coffer | Orobas (Act 2) | Gain 4 potion slots filled with random Potions |
| Delicate Frond | Nonupeipe (Act 3) | At the start of each combat, fill all empty potion slots with random Potions |
| Lost Coffer | Neow | Gain 1 card reward and procure 1 random potion |
| Tiny Mailbox | Uncommon | Whenever you Rest, procure 2 random Potions |
| White Beast Statue | Rare | Potions always appear in combat rewards |
| Cauldron | Shop | Brews 5 random Potions |
| Petrified Toad | Uncommon | Procure a Potion-Shaped Rock at the start of each combat |
| Reptile Trinket | Uncommon | Whenever you use a potion, gain 3 Strength this turn |
| Belt Buckle | Shop | 2 Dexterity while you have no Potions |
| Sozu | Darv (Ancient) | Gain 1 Energy each turn; you can no longer obtain Potions |
Potion Belt is in S tier on Mobalytics' relic tier list (Jul 27, 2026). Events also trade potions: Whispering Hollow sells 2 random Potions for 35 Gold, the Stone of All Time takes a random Potion for 10 Max HP, and The Future of Potions? turns a Potion into an Upgraded card of matching rarity and type (see Events).
Potions unlocked by Epochs
Not every potion is in the pool from the start: seven Epochs on the Timeline add three potions each, per the game data that Spire Codex reads. Each character's Act 3 Epoch, earned by beating Act 3 with that character, adds its three character potions (and unlocks Ascension for it). See Unlocks and the Timeline.
| Epoch | Unlocked by | Potions |
|---|---|---|
| The Pact | Beating Act 3 with the Ironclad | Blood Potion, Soldier's Stew, Ashwater |
| Trophies | Beating Act 3 with the Silent | Poison Potion, Ghost in a Jar, Cunning Potion |
| Grand Strategy | Beating Act 3 with the Regent | Star Potion, Cosmic Concoction, King's Courage |
| Spireborn | Beating Act 3 with the Necrobinder | Potion of Doom, Pot of Ghouls, Bone Brew |
| Resolving Bugs | Beating Act 3 with the Defect | Focus Potion, Essence of Darkness, Potion of Capacity |
| Open | Not stated by a source | Beetle Juice, Mazaleth's Gift, Droplet of Precognition |
| The Calm | Not stated by a source | Powdered Demise, Ship in a Bottle, Touch of Insanity |

Potions in co-op
In Co-op Multiplayer you can give potions to allies. TheGamer (Mar 10, 2026) says potions can be used on allies, and Mobalytics' co-op guide (Jun 2, 2026) names Block Potion and Energy Potion as examples. On the public beta since v0.109.0 (Jul 17, 2026), "you can now play nearly any potion on another player". Potions are not shared: each player has their own, per PC Gamer (Mar 24, 2026).
Best potions
Guides rate potions by when they help, not on one scale. Mobalytics' potion tier list by JapaneseExport (updated Jul 27, 2026) sorts them into Good Always, Good Early, Good Late, Niche/Average and Mediocre, and includes event potions. Its Good Always group includes Ghost in a Jar, Orobic Acid, Focus Potion, Touch of Insanity, Beetle Juice, Potion of Doom, Cure All, Distilled Chaos, Duplicator, Snecko Oil, Heart of Iron, Liquid Memories, Weak Potion, Blood Potion, Regen Potion and Energy Potion. It rates Attack, Fire, Block, Strength, Poison and Vulnerable potions Good Early, Fairy in a Bottle, Gambler's Brew, Swift Potion and Potion of Capacity Good Late, and Speed Potion its only Mediocre pick.
Guides agree you should not hoard potions. TheGamer's Collin MacGregor (Mar 9, 2026) says you get a chance at a free potion after each fight, so use them when a fight goes badly rather than save them for the boss, and check the Merchant's potions. Mobalytics says potions "are not just for bosses".
Some potions suit particular fights. PC Gamer's Abigail Shannon (Mar 13, 2026) recommends an Attack Potion against the Act 1 boss Vantom, whose Slippery turns each hit into 1 damage, and says a Duplication potion usually is not a good fit there.
Potion art
Potions have their own sprites in the sequel. Mega Crit wrote in its August 2025 Neowsletter that each potion got a distinct look and "very rare potions can look quite exotic too".

EventsSlay the Spire 2 has 57 events in OP.GG's v0.111.0 beta data, plus 8 Ancients, met in ? rooms: shared events that can appear in several acts, and events tied to the Overgrowth, Underdocks, Hive or Glory. Each offers two or more choices, such as the Symbiote's Corrupted enchantment or Transform, and the Lantern Key that leads to an Act 3 reward. -
Unlocks and the TimelineSlay the Spire 2 unlocks its characters in a chain by playing one run (win or lose) with each: the Ironclad unlocks the Silent, then the Regent, the Necrobinder and the Defect. Everything else (cards, relics, potions, Ancients, the Underdocks, Ascension, Daily and Custom runs) comes from 57 Epochs on the Timeline, earned by goals such as beating an act or by spending score; Daily and Custom runs earn none.
-
Co-op MultiplayerSlay the Spire 2 has online co-op for up to 4 players, Steam friends only with no matchmaking: one player hosts and the others join, everyone shares the map and fights the same enemies, which scale with the party, while each player keeps their own character, HP, deck, relics and rewards. Co-op has its own multiplayer-only cards and its own Ascension progress. -
RelicsSlay the Spire 2 has relics in seven rarities (Starter, Common, Uncommon, Rare, Shop, Event and Ancient), and OP.GG counts 298 in the game data of the v0.111.0 public beta. Each character starts with one starter relic that Orobas can upgrade to an Ancient version, and Ancient relics from Neow and the other Ancients replace the first game's boss relics.
