Slay the Spire 2 1.0 release: Sep 2027Not announced: our best guess from Mega Crit's 1 to 2 year Early Access plan.
Best guessMega Crit's Early Access FAQ on Steam says it will stay in Early Access "Until the game feels great! Last time we thought it would be about a year and it took about 1.5 years. So perhaps in the same 1 - 2 year range." We count 18 months from the Mar 5, 2026 Early Access launch, as the first game took, to the first Thursday of Sep 2027 (Mega Crit ships on Thursdays) at 10 AM Pacific, the hour of the Early Access launch. Regent Guide

The Regent is one of Slay the Spire 2's two new characters, with 75 HP and Divine Right (gain 3 Stars at the start of each combat). Guides build him around Stars, a second resource that carries over between turns, with Forge and the Sovereign Blade as a backup, and call him the hardest character to master.

To play the Regent well in Slay the Spire 2, guides say to build Star generation first, then Star payoffs, and to treat Forge and the Sovereign Blade as a backup rather than the plan (PCGamesN's Regent guide, Apr 8, 2026; Mobalytics' beginner guide, Mar 19, 2026). He is new to the series, starts with 75 HP, and his starter relic Divine Right gives 3 Stars at the start of each combat. PCGamesN calls him "the most difficult of the five heroes", and both character tier lists rank him B. Advice below is attributed; card numbers are the main branch, v0.107.1, as the game is in Early Access. His cards are on Regent Cards and his story on Regent.

How Stars and Forge work

Stars are a second resource that the Regent keeps from turn to turn. Mega Crit's December 2025 Neowsletter says some cards spend Stars, some scale with stored Stars, and "Stars don't deplete at end of turn and have no cap." TheGamer's Regent guide (Mar 10, 2026) adds that, unlike Energy, Stars are not restored each turn. A Star card shows both costs: Reflect costs 1 Energy plus 3 Stars, and Comet 0 Energy plus 5 Stars.

Forge makes and grows the Sovereign Blade. The first time you Forge in a combat, the Sovereign Blade goes into your hand, and each later Forge adds damage to it (Mega Crit). On the main branch the Blade costs 2 Energy, deals 10 damage and has Retain; upgraded it costs 1. PCGamesN notes it cycles back through your deck, so you may play it several times a fight, and TheGamer says you normally have only one Blade.

Strengths and weaknesses

The Regent is powerful once mastered and unreliable before. Mobalytics' Regent guide (by JapaneseExport, updated Jun 17, 2026) lists combos, Retain and card generation as strengths, and unreliable draw and hard resource management as weaknesses. Pocket Tactics (Oct 5, 2026) says he is weak early and that two resources make bricked hands more likely, and PCGamesN gives him the highest skill ceiling with a consistency problem.

Mega Crit has buffed him more than anyone. Major Update #1 (Apr 17, 2026) said his card pool "has seen more buffs than any other character with just a couple of nerfs, which should address concerns about him feeling weaker than the other characters."

Act 1: generate Stars and survive

Early on, the Regent needs Star generation and defense before he can use his big cards. GameSpot's Regent build (Mar 13, 2026) says to generate Stars with Venerate, Genesis, Glow, Hidden Cache, Gather Light and Knockout Blow, and to stall with defense until you can spend them. PCGamesN's early picks are Gather Light, Glow, Hidden Cache, Solar Strike and Knockout Blow, and it advises building Star generation before taking high Star costs.

Upgrade Glow first. JapaneseExport says an upgraded Glow lets you play Falling Star and stay at 3 Stars, "a very important breakpoint to play staples like Reflect and Gamma Blast." He adds that Reflect is "often worth taking even before your star economy can support it."

PC Gamer's Evan Lahti found the Regent "the least pleasant of the four characters" he cleared at Ascension 10 (Sep 18, 2026), because Star costs block cards until enough Stars are built up. Kotaku's Lewis Parker calls the Regent's Parry card weak (Mar 18, 2026).

Acts 2 and 3: payoffs

In the middle and late game the Regent spends Stars on payoffs. PCGamesN's mid-game Star cards are Astral Pulse, Comet, Genesis, Particle Wall, Crescent Spear, Reflect and Gamma Blast, and by Act 3 Decisions, Decisions, Royal Gamble, Seven Stars, The Smith and Stardust. JapaneseExport rates Royal Gamble the best Star generation once you reach 5 Stars, and Void Form one of the Regent's main Energy sources.

Colorless cards scale the Regent, too. JapaneseExport says "Colorless cards are very powerful in spire 2", so even one source of card generation outscales most fights, and he calls Spectrum Shift, which adds a random Colorless card each turn, "The best of the best." His block engines for the endgame are Child of the Stars and Pillar of Creation.

PCGamesN treats Stars as the main build and adds Forge only on a solid base, because Forge lacks support and answers to several enemies at once, and its character tier list calls Forge cards the main ones to avoid. Mobalytics' beginner guide builds Stars, with Hidden Cache feeding Seven Stars and Comet, but keeps the Sovereign Blade as a backup through Furnace, Bulwark or Refine Blade. PCGamesN says Colorless, Vigor and Minion cards "only supplement the deck".

Harvey Randall's Ascension 10 win shows how one enchantment can make a Regent run: a shop Mystic Lighter on a Sharp-enchanted Seven Stars dealt 18 damage seven times for one Energy (PC Gamer, May 15, 2026).

JapaneseExport calls Big Bang "In contention for strongest card in the game" and CHARGE!! "1 energy for 26 damage is ludicrous", counting its two Minion Dive Bombs at 13 damage each. He calls Alignment "Often over-picked and overrated." The tier lists disagree on several cards: PCGamesN ranks Bombardment S and Pillar of Creation, Spectrum Shift and Crash Landing D, while Mobalytics ranks those three S and Bombardment B. See the Card Tier List.

The public beta has changed some Regent numbers that are not on the main branch: v0.108.0 (Jul 3, 2026) raised Divine Destiny from 6 to 7 Stars, and v0.111.0 (Aug 14, 2026) cut Alignment's Star cost from 3 to 2.

Relics

The Regent has seven relics of his own on the main branch:

Relic Rarity Effect
Fencing Manual Common Forge 10 at the start of combat
Galactic Dust Uncommon 10 Block for every 10 Stars spent
Regalite Uncommon Whenever you create a card, gain 2 Block
Lunar Pastry Rare Gain 1 Star at the end of your turn
Mini Regent Rare The first time you spend Stars each turn, gain 1 Strength
Orange Dough Rare 2 random Colorless cards at the start of combat
Vitruvian Minion Shop Cards containing "Minion" deal double damage and gain double Block

Source: Spire Codex (game data, v0.107.1), read Oct 26, 2026.

Untapped.gg's Dillon Skiffington (Apr 2026) reads Mini Regent and Divine Destiny as signals toward Stars, and Mobalytics' relic tier list (curated by JapaneseExport, Jul 27, 2026) puts Mini Regent, Lunar Pastry, Galactic Dust and Regalite in S tier. Kotaku notes Mini Regent is unlocked by the Regent's 15-boss Epoch. See Relics.

Ancient blessings

Touch of Orobas is the Ancient blessing guides tie most closely to the Regent. It replaces Divine Right with Divine Destiny, which gives 6 Stars at the start of each combat on the main branch (7 on the beta since v0.108.0), and Pocket Tactics' Star build lists Divine Destiny among its relics. His Ancient cards, from Orobas' Archaic Tooth or Darv's Dusty Tome, are Meteor Shower and The Sealed Throne: Mobalytics ranks both S tier, and PCGamesN ranks Meteor Shower S.

Game Rant's Ancients guide (Mar 11, 2026) singles out Darv's Runic Pyramid, which keeps your hand at the end of the turn, as especially valuable for stacking builds "such as the Regent's Stars". JapaneseExport says The Smith combos with Orobas' Electric Shrymp, which makes a Skill play itself at the start of each combat. See Neow and the Ancients.

Bosses and fights that trouble him

The Regent's slow start makes front-loaded fights hard, and his multi-hit cards answer some bosses. Game Rant (Mar 12, 2026) says Act 1's Vantom is "weak to multi-hit attacks, such as Regent's Stardust", since its Slippery stacks cut each hit to 1 damage. Act 3's Aeonglass is a damage race that fills your hand with Wither cards, which PC Gamer (Jun 19, 2026) says deal damage to you and ramp quickly. See Bosses.

Ascension 10

At Ascension 10 the Regent rewards patience and punishes a thin Star economy. PCGamesN says his builds are not tuned for consistent Ascension 10 wins, and Lahti calls clearing A10 with him the least pleasant of his runs. Harvey Randall did win at A10 on the Regent, on the back of the Seven Stars combo above. Game Rant ranks him the hardest character (Mar 10, 2026), "a glass cannon", saying Sovereign Blade builds are slow and Star builds need near-perfect play. The Ascension Guide covers each level.

Co-op is different: PCGamesN calls the Regent "nearly broken" in all-Regent multiplayer parties. See Co-op Strategy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Regent build in Slay the Spire 2? Every guide that ranks them makes Stars the Regent's main build in Slay the Spire 2: generate Stars with Glow, Hidden Cache and Royal Gamble, then spend them on Reflect, Comet, Stardust or Seven Stars. PCGamesN treats Forge and the Sovereign Blade as a second build to add only on a solid base.

Is the Regent good in Slay the Spire 2? The Regent sits in B tier on both PCGamesN's (Apr 28, 2026) and Pocket Tactics' (Oct 5, 2026) Slay the Spire 2 character lists. PCGamesN gives him the highest skill ceiling but a consistency problem.

How do Stars work in Slay the Spire 2? Stars are the Regent's second resource in Slay the Spire 2: they do not reset at the end of a turn and have no cap, and Divine Right gives 3 at the start of each combat. Some cards cost Stars on top of Energy, and some scale with how many you hold.

What does Forge do in Slay the Spire 2? Forge is a Regent mechanic in Slay the Spire 2: the first Forge each combat puts the Sovereign Blade, a 2-Energy attack with Retain, into your hand, and each later Forge adds damage to it. Seeking Edge makes the Blade hit all enemies.

Is the Regent hard in Slay the Spire 2? Game Rant ranks the Regent the hardest Slay the Spire 2 character and PCGamesN "the most difficult of the five heroes", because he manages two resources. TheGamer still suggests learning him before the Defect, as Stars are simpler than Orbs.

How much HP does the Regent have in Slay the Spire 2? The Regent starts with 75 HP in Slay the Spire 2, the same as the Defect, and his starting deck has 4 Strike, 4 Defend, Falling Star and Venerate. He is unlocked by playing a run as the Silent.
