Slay the Spire 2 1.0 release: Sep 2027Not announced: our best guess from Mega Crit's 1 to 2 year Early Access plan.
Best guessMega Crit's Early Access FAQ on Steam says it will stay in Early Access "Until the game feels great! Last time we thought it would be about a year and it took about 1.5 years. So perhaps in the same 1 - 2 year range." We count 18 months from the Mar 5, 2026 Early Access launch, as the first game took, to the first Thursday of Sep 2027 (Mega Crit ships on Thursdays) at 10 AM Pacific, the hour of the Early Access launch. Defect Guide

The Defect is the last Slay the Spire 2 character to unlock, with 75 HP, 3 Orb slots and Cracked Core (Channel 1 Lightning at the start of each combat). Guides build it around Orbs and Focus, with Defragment as the key Power, and treat Claw and Status decks as weaker at high Ascension; both tier lists rank it A.

To play the Defect well in Slay the Spire 2, guides say to build an Orb deck that gains Focus, with Defragment as the card to take as often as possible, and to play for a strong late game (PCGamesN's Defect guide, Apr 7, 2026; Mobalytics' Defect guide, Mar 13, 2026). It is the last character to unlock, after a run as the Necrobinder, and starts with 75 HP and 3 Orb slots; its starter relic Cracked Core Channels 1 Lightning at the start of each combat. Both character tier lists rank it A, behind only the Silent. Advice below is attributed; card numbers are the main branch, v0.107.1, as the game is in Early Access. Its cards are on Defect Cards and its story on Defect.

How Orbs and Focus work

Orbs are the Defect's engine: each sits in a slot, does something passive every turn, and does something bigger when Evoked. Channeling puts an Orb in your first empty slot; with no empty slot, your first Orb is Evoked to make room, and Evoke consumes your rightmost Orb (Mobalytics' keyword guide, Mar 17, 2026). Focus raises Orb effects, "acting like Strength and Dexterity", in PCGamesN's words.

Orb Passive Evoke
Lightning 3 damage to a random enemy 8 damage
Frost 2 Block 5 Block
Dark Adds 6 to its own Evoke damage Hits the enemy with the lowest HP
Plasma 1 Energy 2 Energy
Glass (new) 4 damage to ALL enemies, 1 less each time 8 damage to ALL enemies

Source: PCGamesN's Defect guide, Apr 7, 2026, read Oct 26, 2026.

TheGamer's Defect guide (Mar 15, 2026) adds that each point of Focus adds 1 to damage Orbs and to Frost's Block, and that Plasma ignores Focus (Spire Codex). Early on, TheGamer advises stacking Orbs rather than constantly Evoking them, especially Dark.

Strengths and weaknesses

The Defect is slow to start and very strong once its engine runs. Game Rant's Defect guide (Mar 10, 2026) calls it "virtually unstoppable" at that point and names Power stacking as the core, while Game Rant's difficulty ranking calls it "the most complex character", with easy Claw decks but hard Orb juggling. TheGamer says it "barely has damage of its own", so Strength is less useful to it.

Its card pool has barely moved. At Major Update #1 Mega Crit said the Defect "has seen the least amount of changes of any of the characters", and PCGamesN calls it "barely changed since launch" and flexible in co-op, where it can deal damage or support. Pocket Tactics (Oct 5, 2026) keeps it out of S tier because its builds vary in strength: 0-cost and Claw builds work but have a lower ceiling than all-in Orb builds.

Act 1: survive to the late game

The Defect's Act 1 is about getting through, not winning fast. TheGamer advises playing for the late game: rest when low, and take fewer fights and more Unknown rooms until Act 2. PCGamesN's early Orb cards are Ball Lightning, Cold Snap, Lightning Rod and Focused Strike, all of which Channel an Orb while doing something else.

Your starting cards are worth upgrading. Zap (Channel 1 Lightning) and Dualcast (Evoke your rightmost Orb twice) both cost 1 Energy, and 0 upgraded. PCGamesN calls Frost decks the safest Defect decks.

Acts 2 and 3: Focus and Powers

From Act 2, the Defect scales through Focus, more Orb slots and Powers. PCGamesN adds Glacier, Chill, Hailstorm and Hotfix for consistency, then Capacitor, Defragment, Synchronize and Voltaic late, and calls Defragment the best Focus card and Voltaic the finisher. Mobalytics' advice on Defragment is "take as many of these as you can", and Pocket Tactics wants ideally two, upgraded.

Game Rant names Power stacking, especially Creative AI, as the core of a running Defect. Its Focus build uses Capacitor (2 Orb slots), Defragment (1 Focus), Biased Cognition (4 Focus, then 1 less each turn), Coolant, Glacier, Chill, Hailstorm and Voltaic.

PCGamesN focuses on Orbs because Status and Claw decks lose effectiveness at higher Ascension. Claw works by growth: each Claw played raises the damage of every Claw that combat, by 2, or 3 upgraded, and Hologram, Scrape and Skim let you play several a turn. The Status deck is new in Slay the Spire 2: its cards add Status cards such as Dazed, Slimed, Void and Burn to your deck on purpose, and its payoffs care about them (Spire Codex).

The tier lists disagree on several Defect cards. PCGamesN puts Hologram, Double Energy and Voltaic in S tier and Focused Strike in A, while Mobalytics ranks Hologram and Double Energy B, Voltaic C and Focused Strike D, and puts Shatter, Null and Overclock in S. See the Card Tier List.

The public beta has changed some Defect cards that are not on the main branch. v0.110.0 (Jul 31, 2026) raised Biased Cognition to 5(6) Focus and stopped Synchronize from Exhausting, and v0.111.0 (Aug 14, 2026) cut Synchronize to 1(2) Focus per unique Orb and reworked Hyperbeam. On the main branch, Major Update #2 (Jun 19, 2026) gave Infused Core its extra Lightning damage.

Relics

The Defect has seven relics of its own on the main branch:

Relic Rarity Effect
Data Disk Common Start each combat with 1 Focus
Gold-Plated Cables Uncommon Your rightmost Orb triggers its passive an additional time
Symbiotic Virus Uncommon Channel 1 Dark at the start of combat
Emotion Chip Rare If you lost HP last turn, trigger all Orb passives at the start of your turn
Metronome Rare 30 damage to ALL enemies the first time you Channel 7 Orbs each combat
Power Cell Rare 2 zero-cost cards from your Draw Pile into your Hand at the start of combat
Runic Capacitor Shop 3 more Orb slots

Source: Spire Codex (game data, v0.107.1), read Oct 26, 2026.

Relics often decide which Defect deck a run becomes. Untapped.gg's Dillon Skiffington (Apr 2026) reads Power Cell as a signal toward Claw with All for One, and Data Disk toward Focus Orbs. Mobalytics calls Metronome "free AoE 30 damage", and its relic tier list (Jul 27, 2026) puts Data Disk, Gold-Plated Cables, Emotion Chip and Runic Capacitor in S tier. Kotaku notes Gold-Plated Cables is unlocked by the Defect's 15-boss Epoch. See Relics.

Ancient blessings

Touch of Orobas upgrades the Defect's starter relic most sharply: Infused Core Channels 3 Lightning at the start of each combat, and Lightning deals 1 more damage, a line added in v0.105.0 that reached the main branch with Major Update #2. Its Ancient cards, from Orobas' Archaic Tooth or Darv's Dusty Tome, are Quadcast and Biased Cognition; PCGamesN ranks Quadcast A.

Mobalytics' Orb deck lists Vakuu's Jeweled Mask, which puts a random Power from your Draw Pile into your hand free each combat (OP.GG, beta v0.111.0 data). Tanx's Spiked Gauntlets, which makes Powers cost 1 more in exchange for Energy, works against a deck that Game Rant says runs on Power stacking. See Neow and the Ancients.

Bosses and fights that trouble it

The Defect's weak spot is the boss that demands fast damage. PC Gamer's Abigail Shannon said the Doormaker, the old Act 3 boss, was one fight where the Defect does not excel (Mar 13, 2026); Mega Crit replaced it with Aeonglass in Major Update #2. Aeonglass is itself a damage race that fills your hand with Wither cards, which PC Gamer (Jun 19, 2026) says ramp quickly, and Aeonglass starts with 3 Artifact (OP.GG, beta v0.111.0 data).

Orbs and Doom also interact in co-op: since beta v0.108.0 (Jul 3, 2026, not on the main branch), Orb passives at the end of turn resolve before Doom, so a Defect's Orbs can finish an enemy a Necrobinder has Doomed. See Bosses and Co-op Strategy.

Ascension 10

At Ascension 10, guides favor the all-in Orb deck over Claw and Status. PCGamesN says Status and Claw lose effectiveness at higher Ascension, and Pocket Tactics says their ceiling is lower than all-in Orb builds. PC Gamer's Harvey Randall has won at Ascension 10 on every character, the Defect included (PC Gamer, Jun 12, 2026). The Ascension Guide covers each level.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Defect build in Slay the Spire 2? Guides make Orbs with Focus the Defect's best build in Slay the Spire 2, built on Defragment, Capacitor, Glacier and a finisher such as Voltaic or Multi-Cast. PCGamesN and Pocket Tactics say Claw and Status decks have a lower ceiling at high Ascension.

Is the Defect good in Slay the Spire 2? The Defect is A tier on both PCGamesN's (Apr 28, 2026) and Pocket Tactics' (Oct 5, 2026) Slay the Spire 2 character lists, second only to the Silent. Game Rant calls it "virtually unstoppable" once its engine runs.

How do you unlock the Defect in Slay the Spire 2? The Defect is the last character to unlock in Slay the Spire 2: play one run, won or lost, as the Necrobinder. Before that you must unlock the Silent, the Regent and the Necrobinder in turn, starting from the Ironclad.

What does Focus do in Slay the Spire 2? Focus raises the Defect's Orb effects in Slay the Spire 2: each point adds 1 to Lightning and Dark damage and to Frost's Block. Plasma, which gives Energy, ignores Focus.

What are the best Defect cards in Slay the Spire 2? Defragment, Capacitor, Glacier, Chill, Synchronize, Modded and Echo Form are S tier on both PCGamesN's and Mobalytics' Slay the Spire 2 lists. Mobalytics' guide says to take as many Defragments as you can.

Is the Defect hard to play in Slay the Spire 2? Game Rant calls the Defect "the most complex character" in Slay the Spire 2, and TheGamer rates it among the hardest because it manages Orbs as a second resource. Claw decks are the simpler way to play it.
